Here’s Why OnePlus Smartphones Don’t Have IP Ratings: Carl Pei

OnePlus Co-founder Carl Pei has revealed some interesting information on why OnePlus devices don’t come with an IP certification in an interview with popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee.

An IP rating is a mobile industry standard for the level of protection of a smartphone against solids and liquids. Several mid-range and premium smartphones come with an IP68 rating, which means a device can withstand submersion up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for about thirty minutes.

OnePlus devices are known for providing high-end specs and premium quality at lower prices. However, the Chinese manufacturer has always avoided offering an IP rating to its devices. Of all the OnePlus devices, only the OnePlus 8 Pro is IP68 rated, which begs the question, why OnePlus devices don’t come with an IP certification?

“The additional cost lies in machines required to certify a device as IP rated”

When asked about the million-dollar question, Carl Pei said that it’s not the cost of adding seals to make the smartphone waterproof, but the additional costs that come from certifying the device as IP rated.

It’s a big fixed investment to buy all these machines that allow us to test the devices through kind of blowing air into the ports to see if the air thing comes out

Interestingly, smartphone manufacturers don’t just throw the device underwater to get the IP certification, in fact it involves huge machines and hours of testing. Another cost factor, according to OnePlus CEO, is that every IP rated phone undergoes testing at the end of the assembly line, which also means adding more manpower in the manufacturing process.

Carl said that, overall, it costs about $15 on each phone to have an IP rating. It may sound less but it’s huge save when trying to lower the overall cost of a device. That being said, Carl said that OnePlus phones are still safe from rain or occasional water spills.

Carl, moreover, confirmed that all OnePlus Nord devices have been tested for 30 cm water submersion for up to 30 seconds. OnePlus Nord is the most anticipated budget smartphone from the company, launching next week. Tune in to Marques Brownlee’s YouTube video to see how it looks and other aspects of a smartphone that contribute to the final price.
