Boom Beach and Clash of Clans are the flagship strategy games from Supercell. In Boom Beach, your job is to build a fort and attack others. It contains a decent single player along with multiplayer battles. Instead of taking a full base, you’ll be enacting beach raids which feel like they’re quicker. In Clash of Clans, you build a village, defend it against attackers, and attack other players online. Both games have a ton of content and a ton of people playing which makes them equally great for those who want to engage with online multiplayer strategy. They’re also both free with in-app purchses. Call of Champions is a MOBA where you and two other players battle against three opponents online. You play in an arena and your job is to the Orb of Death to your opponents’ towers to destroy them. You can play an unlimited number of games for free and there are 15 champions to choose from (you may have to buy some of them with real money). It’s a solid MOBA and one of the best strategy games on mobile.

Chess is one of the world’s oldest strategy games and it’s still a challenging game to play today. Chess Free is an entirely free chess game with no in-app purchases. Clash Royale is one of two card dueling strategy games on this list. With Clash Royale, your job is to build a deck and then duel other people online. The strategy is to use your cards more intelligently than the other person. You’ll get some basic cards to start with and you’ll unlock more as you play. Winners win trophies which improves their ranking and you can join clans so you can play with friends. It also includes a feature called TV Royale where you can watch duels to see how the masters do it. It’s free to play with in-app purchases, but so is every other card dueling game.
Great Big War Game
[Price: $6.99 with in-app purchases]
Great Big War Game is a strategy game where you must deploy your troops in various situations and come out victorious. It features a 50 mission campaign, online multiplayer, and even a pass-and-play local multiplayer so there are a bunch of ways you can play. The story is littered with goofy dialogue and it’s clear that this is a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. There is a lot of content here and the game is really good. Don’t worry about those in-app purchases, this isn’t a pay to win game.
Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft
[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Hearthstone is currently the most popular card dueling strategy game on mobile. With this title, you build decks of cards and then use them to duel other players online. You unlock cards as you go and gradually get better and stronger. This game has cross-platform support if you use a Battle.net account so you can play on PC as well as mobile which is a nice touch. Blizzard has done a decent job of adding in new content to keep the game fresh and it remains probably the best card duel option available right now.
