Google Maps is getting an update that should help your get ahead in the daily grind. A new, tab-based interface brings together features like commute information, Driving Mode, or restaurant recommendations. The new UI will start rolling out to Android devices starting today, according to a post on the Google blog.
After the update, a swipe up from the bottom of the screen will reveal a tab bar, with three main entries: Places, Driving, and Transit.
The Places tab includes recommendations for eateries, grouped around various themes, like “business dining” or “cheap places.” There are also buttons for picking the kind of place you’re looking for, like Breakfast, Drinks, or Coffee. The Places tab also includes various other types of places that people tend to search for on a regular basis, including pharmacies, grocery stores and ATMs. These were available until now through the search interface, though the new system seems more intuitive.
Under the Driving tab, you’ll get real time ETAs for Work and Home (provided you set those addresses beforehand), information on traffic, as well as alerts for incidents that might affect your drive. You can also access Driving Mode from here, which is perfect for the times you don’t need navigation instructions, but you still want a map of your surroundings.
Lastly, the Transit tab lists bus or train lines for your Work and Home location, as well as nearby stations, ETAs for the next bus or train, and real-time schedules for nearby stations.
Overall, this new UI seems designed to make some of Maps’ most useful features easier to discover and access. The update also prepares the ground for more recommendations and other smart features, potentially powered by AI.
The update will be rolling out in the next hours and days, but you can hit the Play Store button below to check for the update right now.
