HMD Global has announced the Nokia X71 in Taiwan. The phone is the first from the Finnish OEM to feature a 48 MP camera and punch hole display.
HMD Global announced the phone earlier today and details can now be found on its Taiwan portal (via Fone Arena). Pre-orders for the device begin next week in Taiwan, though we don’t yet have any details about other markets (I’ve reached out to HMD Global for more).
The Nokia X71 comes with a 6.39-inch, Full-HD+, LCD display, Snapdragon 660 chipset, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage (plus microSD card support) — pretty much standard fare for a modern midrange handset.
The phone also packs a 3,500mAh battery with USB-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, rear fingerprint sensor, and it’s running Android Pie. Unlike many Nokia devices, this isn’t based on the Android One program.
The Nokia X71’s cameras are probably its most interesting asset. It features a triple camera setup with a 48MP (f/1.8) sensor, 8MP (ultra wide-angle, 120 degrees) sensor, and 5MP depth sensor.
This is HMD Global’s first foray into 48MP camera territory (even the flagship Nokia 9 PureView missed out with its five 12MP camera sensors) and it means the X71 should be able to achieve some detailed shots and impressive zoom, at a slight cost to low-light performance.
Note that 48MP sensors aren’t an automatic guarantee of camera quality, though; you can learn more about them in our ‘Should you buy a 48MP smartphone‘ article.
As for the X71’s dimensions, you’re looking at 157.19 x 76.45 x 7.98 mm, while it weighs 180g.
It looks like an elegantly designed device with a well-optimized display. There appears to be only a slightly larger bezel on the chin stopping it from achieving ‘full-screen’ status.
In Taiwan, the price is set at 11,900 New Taiwan Dollars (~$385), or around 345 euros, and it’s coming in just one color variant — the black option you see in the featured image. It’s not yet clear if there will be other RAM and storage options available, but it doesn’t look like it.
