OnePlus 8 Pro comes out a winner in torture test

The OnePlus 8 Pro is a tough cookie as proven by YouTuber Zack Nelson’s JerryRigEverything torture test (see video above). Both the front and the back of the new flagship are coated in 3D Corning Gorilla Glass and the body is held up by a metal frame. These attributes prove to be key in making the phone strong and durable.

In the JerryRigEverything durability test, the OnePlus 8 Pro easily survives scratches on both the display and the back panel. As is the case with most phones built out of glass and metal, the OnePlus 8 Pro scratches at level six on the Mohs hardness scale, with deeper grooves appearing at level seven. This is just like what we saw on the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Pixel 4 XL, but unlike the Galaxy Z Flip which starts scratching between level two and three.

Moving on, Nelson notes that cleaning the soft metal dust created by scratching the back of the OnePlus 8 Pro is relatively easy. Basically, you should avoid keeping the phone in a purse or a pocket with other metal objects like coins. Your best bet to keep the back of the phone scratch-free is to use a bumper case.

Another staple of the YouTuber is a knife scratch test for in-display fingerprint sensors. In the case of the OnePlus 8 Pro, the scratching doesn’t hamper the functionality of the fingerprint scanner in any way.

A burn test, however, does leave a white mark on the display after 30 seconds of exposure to a lighter flame. This is where the Galaxy S20 Ultra came out stronger as any screen burn effects eventually disappeared from its display.

In the bend test, the metal frame of the OnePlus 8 Pro held its own against pressure. It flexed just ever so slightly but there were no cracks or permanent damage to the body.

Overall, the OnePlus 8 Pro seems to be a solid phone as far as build quality is concerned. It’s right up there with other flagships, which is good news for buyers who’ll end up paying at least $899 for it.
