If you have been dreaming about hanging out with your friends abroad but without taking the pain of traveling, Microsoft Mesh might be the answer to it. The company unveiled its new holographic tech at the Insight 2021 conference.
So, let’s explore what Microsoft Mesh has to offer to the users.
What is Microsoft Mesh? What does it do?
Microsoft Mesh is a new mixed reality tech developed by Microsoft on the Azure platform. It can be used to bring together people from different locations in a single space and make them feel as if they’re sitting in the same room. It’s in a direction towards what we see in the Marvel movies.
Speaking of possible use cases, Microsoft Mesh can be used to conduct a virtual team meeting or multiple people can work on the same product design which will be recreated as a hologram with every minute detail.
Initially, Microsoft Mesh will recreate the animated avatars of people in the mixed reality space. But the future plans include teleporting a photorealistic virtual version of a person complete with gestures and facial expressions.
What more we could expect is people attending music concerts and exhibitions virtually at the comfort of their homes using the tech. We can also have doctors assisting virtually from remote locations.
What devices can run Microsoft Mesh?
Mesh is currently available on Hololens 2 devices. But Microsoft has opened up the platform so developers can create Mesh-enabled apps and experiences for other headsets, smartphones, PCs, and tablets.
Are there any Mesh apps?
As of now, the company has released the Microsoft Mesh for Hololens preview app and the Mesh-enabled AltspaceVR app that can be used to hold meetings. But future plans include integrating Mesh into other products like Microsoft Teams and Dynamics 365.
Is anyone else making similar attempts?
While Microsoft has been working on Mesh for the last few years, the concept isn’t entirely new. In the past, we have seen such virtual teleportation attempts from companies. For example, Facebook’s Oculus Party lets people chat together but in VR.
So, this was some information about the new Microsoft Mesh tech. If you have something to add, then drop your thoughts in the comments.
